Boxing

John Roseberry-Shihan started his journey towards the martial arts as a boxer. In 1952, and as an accomplished golden gloves boxer and seasoned street fighter, Roseberry enlisted in the Air Force. One day Roseberry had fallen in, and was standing at attention. The commanding officer asked his corpsmen, "Does anybody have boxing experience?" Roseberry and one other stepped forward and were offered assignment to the Special Services. Says Roseberry, "Special Services basically meant troop entertainment. It was a great job. We trained and boxed in matches staged for the entertainment of the troops." As a Special Services boxer, John "Tank" Roseberry won many titles including the All-Services Championship.

Sparring Class

Sparring class is our opportunity to apply the techniques we learn in the dojo. Since we are fortunate enough to have a school that teaches multiple arts, we try to facilitate students from all disciplines. Goju Ryu Karate-do is a close-in fighting system, so our Karate-ka are taught to throw, sweep, and take down their opponent.

The current Saturday afternoon sparring class began about 6 years ago with the mission of helping our Karate-ka prepare for point fighting tournaments. It has evolved well beyond that. Currently we have Karate, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu students attending. To continue promoting this blend Sensei Ossian invites guest instructors to bring in new information and a fresh perspective. David also brings in students and teachers from other dojos to train and fellowship with the group. Sensei Schafer from Jiu-Jitsu has agreed to try and bring his perspective to the group once a month.

This class will give you an excellent workout. It will open your eyes and mind to all that is available in our school. You will meet people from other arts and other dojos, with the opportunity to share, to teach, and to learn. Most of all it will give you confidence to know that what you are learning will work in the real world. Typically there are no uniform requirements, with rare exception. Personnel protective equipment is highly recommended, we do have some spare equipment to loan.
